Retailery

Project Brief

What exactly is The Retailery, and what do they offer?

That’s the question we were asked to answer, in website form. A new venture established in 2016, The Retailery was created by Made Public – a Community Interest Company created in 2012 – and the local Council. With a logo and business values already established, The Retailery needed a website to help bring the project alive – merging corporate function and creative style to attract the interest of fledgeling businesses and start-ups and clearly demonstrating the services and benefits available.

To achieve this goal, a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of each stakeholder was required, to allow delivery of a modern and appealing website which incorporated accessibility, style and functionality true to the aims and values of each.

Objectives

A clean, modern website which reflects the branding and style of Made Public, in a way that is specific to The Retailery
A flexible content management system, able to be manipulated and updated by a number of different users
Adaptable and sustainable design which will retain the overall feel whilst allowing for adjustment as The Retailery grows and changes over time
Smooth and functional design which effectively showcases the benefits and services offered by The Retailery to a number of different audiences

Made Public is an organisation that specialises in project-management and organisation of cultural and community initiatives that aim to revitalise the local area and showcase home-grown creative talent. Havering is the start up capital of Britain, and also has the largest number of successful technology startups in the U.K. With a significant number of business minded people in the area looking for opportunities to grow and develop, Made Public worked with the Council to develop The Retailery as a ‘creative playground’, offering affordable fixed and hot-desk office and retail space for local makers, thinkers and doers alongside business support and mentoring.

This informed our investigation into the local and national standards for similar companies, to help determine the capabilities, usability and feel that would work best for the website. The results suggested that a bold, clean site with a simple yet stylish appearance would be likely to generate the maximum response.

Using the logo of The Retailery as a starting point, we used the bold, clear lines and high contrast black and white to design a website, assertive lines and a complementary boxy style. This gives a very simple but distinctive look which fits well with the overall ethos of the company, in addition to fulfilling the criteria of accessibility, adaptability and attractiveness for a range of audiences.

Results

Over 28,000 website page visits in the first year.

The wordpress content management system has been easily utilised by a range of staff, with the site regularly updated competently.
